Perth Academy pupils take part in remembrance week events

-

Senior pupils at Perth Academy will carry out a walk of remembrance as part of a weeklong programme of events to mark Armistice Day and the centenary of the First World War.

Around 50 pupils will walk from St Matthew’s on the morning of Friday November 9, arriving at the school for the start of its remembrance service.

The walk is part of the school’s Flowers of the Forest project, which aims to commemorate all of the names on the school’s war memorial.

It is also part of the school’s remembrance week, running from November 5-11, which is organised in conjunction with St Matthew’s Church.

A further part of the project, entitled There But Not There, will see a silhouette of a soldier sitting at a desk placed in front of the school memorial.

A second “Tommy” figure will be displayed in the first floor office window of Hardies at the old Academy building and 10 silhouettes will be put up in St Matthew’s.

An Always With Us event will also be running all week at St Matthew’s. The church will be open during the day, with displays and refreshments.

There will also be lunchtime talks, and a tribute concert on Tuesday November 13, featuring pupils at the school with professional performers.

A spokesperson from the school said: “The Flowers of the Forest project has been such a success, and this is a great opportunity to share the work with the people of Perth, as well as paying tribute to the fallen on the centenary of the Armistice.

“The project itself doesn’t end there, because there will be two further ceremonies: one in December and in March 2019.”
