Study tour funding for young farmer
A team of 16 has been selected to participate in a Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs’ study tour to California.
Local young farmer Anna Sloan has been sponsored to participate in the agricultural and rural affairs trip by rural insurance company, NFU Mutual Agents in Perth.
The tour to farms, industry suppliers and markets will take place in November and December.
It aims to give young farmers an insight into farming in another country and the primary focus is on improving efficiency by embracing technology to farm smarter, increase productivity and drive forward the agricultural sector.
Anna said she wanted to get a full picture of California agriculture and the issues facing the industry in the United States.
She said: “Coming from an arable farm and having studied maths at university, I anticipate that this study tour will broaden my knowledge of the application of mathematics in agriculture .
“This is a great opportunity for me to experience the similarities and differences of agriculture somewhere other than Scotland, to talk with farmers first hand and learn how they are embracing technology to ensure that they advance as individual businesses and as an industry, in an ever increasingly volatile global market.”
NFU Mutual Perth Agent Margaret Hebbourn, said it was important to support educational trips at a critical time for the agricultural industry.
She added: “We were very happy to support Anna and are very much looking forward to hearing all about her trip when she returns.”
