DELIGHT FOR ANGUS CLUBS

It was an eventful day for two of the Angus clubs on Saturday with victories in the big cup matches being played, writes our Amateur correspondent.

Shotz AFC edged home as the headline makers after lifting the Tay Valley Trophy at Canniepairt, Tayport, defeating Newport 3-0 in the final.

With a 2-0 lead at half-time the Arbroath side always seemed to be in charge and another one later in the game sealed things.

Kyle Brown (2) and Dale Riddle got the goals for Shotz.

There was also delight for AHSFP in their Scottish Cup second round replay in Aberdeen against Rattrays which they won 2-0.

Strikes from Callum Beattie and Chris Nicol did the damage there which resulted in a passage to round three.

They now have the exciting prospect of meeting Drumchapel United next. Eight Midlands clubs out of 20 will now participate in the third round.

The Premier League, with only 12 sides this season, looks as if it will be more competitive than of late. Leading the way are Lochee United after overtaking Tayside Fire Brigade who had a second losing weekend. United defeated Morgan Academy FPs 5-2, although the game was finely poised at 0-0 at half-time. After the break Liam Forsyth knocked one in early on from 10 yards to put the FPs ahead before an astonishing referee’s decision set up the passage of play that enabled Lochee to equalise.

This widely recognised injustice did not serve the school side well and with the FPs’ focus lost United went on to win comfortably.

Liam Nugent, Chris Irvine, Ryan Stewart, Harley Wallace and Danny Moir netted United’s nap hand with Jason Alexander getting Morgan’s second.

It was business as usual at Fintry where the home team defeated the Firies 5-1.

Darren Cooper, Brian Borland, Alex Gibb, Graeme McLeish and Richard Carlyle for Fintry and Danny Albayati for the Brigade side provided the spectators with some super goals.

Menzieshill AFC edged past Carnoustie Panmure YM by the odd goal in three, though it’s fair to say YM probably deserved something from the game.

Paul Cottrell had scored for them before Jack McMillan dislocated his shoulder after which they hit the post twice – so no luck there. Barnhill are on a good run just now and swept aside Invergowrie 5-0. Gary Middleton (2), Murray Bisset, Daryll Small and Blair White marked Gowrie’s card.

In the last of the Premier matches another potential title challenger, Lowson United, came from 4-2 down to Montrose to win 6-4.

Keiron Crighton (3), Scott Fullerton, Mike Bell and Mark Godfrey got the Forfar side out of trouble in a brilliant match.

Monifieth Tayside and Finavon won their Division 1 matches, while Forfar West End, also from that division, went out of the North of Tay when they were defeated 3-1 by SMS Cannon Fodder.
