EAST FIFE 3 BRECHIN CITY 1

East Fife boss Darren Young led East Fife to their eighth straight win and hailed the work ethic of his squad.

The Methil men really are on a terrific run of form and had little trouble brushing off Brechin City.

Although it is still early days in the league campaign, third placed East Fife’s victory created a healthy sixpoint advantage over City in fourth.

It was a totally deserved win, Darren Dods’ side really only threatening for a short spell at the start of the second half.

Young said: “We defended from the front and everyone to a man was brilliant. We were nice and solid defensively.

“It’s a great position to be in and for me I’ve never been in the position before of having the luxury of such a good and talented squad.

“I’ve said it before that anybody who comes in and starts wouldn’t weaken the team in any way. They all have different skills and attributes.

“We take things a game at a time, see who we’re up against and work out how we’re going to get at them.”

East Fife started the game by far the better of the two sides but it took until just a few minutes before the break for them to take the lead.

And City had a hand in the opener, Ryan McGeever’s pass back woefully short, allowing Aaron Dunsmore to collect, race clear on goal and net.

It was a deserved lead, but Brechin came out for the start of the second half looking a lot better.

After a spell of pressure they pulled level when Sean Burns was brought down inside the box. Callum Tapping stepped up and gave Brett Long no chance with his penalty.

The equaliser kickstarted the Fifers again and they would go on to ease to victory.

Anton Dowds netted their second when he crashed a close-range finish above Connor Brennan.

From then on it was pretty plain sailing for the Methil men and their afternoon was made that little bit more comfortable when Scott Agnew netted from the spot after Dowds had been fouled.

City boss Darren Dods said: “When it went 1-1 I thought we were in the ascendency after that but then we gave the ball away on the edge of the box and they punished us.

“The third goal deflated us. That’s not like us, we always battle right until the end.

“We didn’t look like we were going to come back after that and that’s probably the most disappointing thing of the game.”
