Blues apology to Jose after melee

-

The Football Association is awaiting the referee’s report before deciding whether any further action is warranted over the unsavoury scenes on the touchline at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho took exception to the way Chelsea coach Marco Ianni celebrated Ross Barkley’s late equaliser in the 2-2 draw, prompting a melee around the tunnel.

The Portuguese received an apology from Ianni and Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri and said he considers the matter closed, but it remains to be seen whether the FA opts to take further action over the incident.

Antonio Rudiger had evaded Paul Pogba at a corner to power a free header past David De Gea to give the Blues a first half lead.

But Anthony Martial’s second-half double looked set to earn United all three points until Barkley’s intervention deep into stoppage time.

Leaders Manchester City turned on the style in the second half to brush aside Burnley 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

Sergio Aguero set the ball rolling in the 17th-minute, but a controversial second from Bernardo Silva, after Burnley’s defenders appeared to stop following a foul on Leroy Sane and the ball ran out of play, sealed City’s win with Fernandinho adding a third on the hour mark.

Pep Guardiola’s men wrapped up victory in style with further strikes from Riyad Mahrez and Sane.

Mohamed Salah scored his first goal in five matches as Liverpool slugged their way to an unconvincing 1-0 win at Huddersfield.

Salah struck in the 24th minute after an incisive pass from Xherdan Shaqiri split the home defence.

Tottenham had keeper Hugo Lloris to thank for three excellent saves from Marko Arnautovic which paved the way for a gutsy 1-0 win over West Ham at the London Stadium thanks to an Erik Lamela goal in the 44th minute.

Newcastle slumped to the bottom of the table after losing their fifth straight home game, 1-0 to Brighton.

Cardiff romped to their first win of the season and increased Fulham’s woes after a 4-2 triumph in the Welsh capital while Watford earned a surprise 2-0 win over Wolves at Molineux and Southampton were held to a goalless home draw by Bournemouth.
