Understrength Cowden have too much for Bully Wee

-

COWDENBEATH 2 CLYDE 1

Cowdenbeath won their first second round Scottish Cup tie in three seasons and few could say they did not deserve this success.

Clyde have made a good start to the Ladbrokes League Two programme and sit third, but they found an understrength Blue Brazil difficult to master.

Cowdenbeath took the lead in nine minutes when Fraser Mullen’s curling free-kick was met by Robbie Deas at the back post and his header gave keeper Blair Currie no chance.

After that, Cowden had chances to stretch their lead while the Bully Wee huffed and puffed without putting home keeper Dave McGurn under pressure.

A fine finish from David Cox from close in after a good cross from sub Kris Renton with seven minutes left tied the game up, although former Dundee United striker David Goodwillie pulled one back for the visitors.

Cowden boss Gary Bollan was delighted with the way his team played against Clyde.

He said: “Some people may have felt it was a shock result us beating Clyde, but I felt we merited the win.

“We were short of a few players but the men who took on Clyde played well.”

The scorer of the second goal against Clyde, and William Hill man of the match, David Cox, agreed.

He said: “I felt we always looked capable of scoring against Clyde for their defenders found our pace hard to handle and I was delighted to get on the end of Kris Renton’s cross and get the second which gave us a safety cushion.”

Third round draw: Airdrieonians v Dumbarton, Alloa Athletic v Brechin, Arbroath v Stranraer, Beith v Ayr United, Berwick Rangers v East Fife, Cowdenbeath v Brora Rangers, East Kilbride v Gala Fairydean Rovers, Edinburgh City v Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Forfar Athletic v BSC Glasgow, Fraserburgh v Cove Rangers or Auchinleck Talbot, Greenock Morton v Peterhead, Montrose v Annan Athletic, Queen of the South v Formartine United, Queen’s Park v Raith Rovers, Stenhousemuir v Falkirk, University of Stirling v Elgin City. The ties will be played on Saturday November 24.
