Bonfire night celebrations will light up sky above Perthshire

-

Around 8,000 people are expected to venture on to Perth’s South Inch for the region’s biggest bonfire and fireworks display this evening.

The event has once again been organised by the volunteers of Perth Strathearn Round Table, with assistance from Perth and Kinross Council and Perth Common Good Fund.

The rise in the event’s popularity will see Edinburgh Road closed with diversions in place to allow the public to roam free around South Inch.

Live bands will take to the stage at 6pm, with the bonfire being set alight at 7pm before the fireworks take centre stage at 7.30pm, with Perth and Kinross Provost Dennis Melloy stepping forward to set them off.

Now in its 40th year, the Perth fireworks have grown substantially over the years and in 2013 were part of The Guardian’s top 10 UK firework displays.

Event organiser and Round Table member Paul Sharkey said: “It gets bigger and bigger every year.

“It’s a free event but we always ask for people to donate generously as the money will go back into the local community.

“The fireworks we have this year are better than ever and the bonfire, live music and food vendors attract more people.

“We picked up the Guy from local school Fairview Primary on Tuesday. We are always thankful of their work and all of the volunteers that help us out.

“Perth is getting famous for hosting events and this is one of the original ones.”

Displays will also be held tonight at Pitlochry’s Recreation Field from 6pm and Market Park, Crieff, from 7.15pm.
