SORRY DAY FOR MIDLAND SIDES

Five of the remaining seven Midland sides were drawn on their own patch in the Scottish Amateur Cup third round ties played on Saturday but there was only one positive result arising from this advantage with quality coming to the fore in the end, writes our Amateur correspondent.

Barnhill stopped the whitewash with a 3-3 draw against Fauldhouse and like the last round will have to rely on another away replay to get into round four.

Goals from Ryan Thomson, Robbie Whyte and David Salisbury kept the Ferry side’s interest alive. Carnoustie Panmure YM were the odd team out, travelling to take on Mossblown Boswell and returning with a credible draw which in truth could readily have been converted into a win. Fraser Ogilvie got them back on to level terms after an early setback and Birdsall put the Angus men 2-1 ahead. But the home side equalised to earn a second bite. Apart from Montrose, whose fourth round tie against St Mungo’s was postponed, it was exit stage left for the remainder.

Lowson United hosted Oban Saints who made the quarters last year so the Forfar side knew what they were up against. Playing into a gale in the first half United fell one behind but levelled on the 75th-minute through Rory Crighton.

After that the Forfar side had chances to progress but two late counters for the visitors ended their participation. Elsewhere Newport went down 1-0 to Rothie Rovers and Lochee United were ousted 3-0 by fomer Scottish winners Dumbarton Academy.

Both Invergowrie and AHSFP had difficult ties, against Kennoway and Drumchapel Amateurs respectively, and both went down 5-1. In the Premier there were wins for both Fintry and Menzieshill AFC and along with Lowson and Lochee they have created a gap at the top away from the rest of the pack.

A Richard Carlyle goal was the difference between Fintry and Tayside Fire Brigade. Menzieshill were 4-1 winners over Broughty United thanks to Ross Grant and Lee Roeleveld doubles. In Division 1, with Newport on cup duty, Forfar West End, Kirriemuir Thistle and Shotz all had chances to close the gap on the Fifers and they did just that with respective wins over FC Polonia, Wellbank and Monifieth.
