100 years ago

Germany must hoist the white flag and send a deputation through the Allied lines before she can learn the terms upon which the Allies will grant an armistice. Marshal Fochs holds the conditions and President Wilson has been asked to intimate to Germany that if she desires to know the terms she must apply to him in the usual military form. By the conditions of the armistice granted to AustriaHun­gary, the Allies will have the right of free movement over all the roads, railways and waterways.

50 years ago

One of Kirkcaldy’s best-known and most prolific talkers found himself “speechless for the first time in my life” last night and still managed to get a 15-minute speech over to his audience. Mr Don Allison, the publicity controller for Caledonian Cinemas in Scotland, was due to give a talk to a mothers’ club in Kirkcaldy when he found himself silenced by laryngitis. Instead, the speech was delivered to the audience by a member of the club while he sat in the background listening.

A woman moving house mistakenly threw out thousands of pounds worth of jewellery during the flit, it was revealed yesterday. The jewellery was contained in a pouch inside an old chest which the woman threw out during her move. She did not even realise her gems were missing until she heard that a young boy had found jewellery in a rubbish tip. Now she has been reunited with her gems, valued at almost £4,000, after they were found by Lewis Clow, 12, in the skip at Aberfoyle.

Perth’s iconic Fergusson Gallery will be transforme­d as part of a multi-million-pound plan to rescue the city’s flagging nightlife. A widerangin­g strategy has been drawn up by chiefs from Perth and Kinross Council after a study revealed nearly 60% of the local population had never set foot in the centre after 6pm. The £14 million programme will use inventive lighting and new infrastruc­ture to bring more visitors into the area. The local authority has already set aside funding for the project.
