Distraction hobbies down to an art in Student’s absence

Onwards and upwards with my plans for self-improving hobbies as I fill any spare time that might otherwise become clogged up with missing The Student.

At this point, it would be helpful if anyone who remembers my efforts at learning to play the piano in later life would just stop sniggering. It’s not as easy as it looks, OK?

I have, as ever, received advice from friends and family in my endeavours.

I am swaying towards doing another art course, but my sister – who accompanied me on a weeklong summer course in life drawing a few years ago – was quick to pour scorn on the idea.

“Please tell me you’re not doing another life drawing class? I’m still suffering flashbacks from our summer course, when we had that male model and you had to be removed from the classroom for losing control of yourself when the teacher told you you’d got the perspective all wrong in the genital area.

“I had to explain you’d drawn that area with your eyes closed, and you got the giggles so badly, I had to sit with you on the naughty step outside.”

Rude. And jealous.

One friend said: “If it’s anything to do with cocktail making, you’re on your own. I was there that Christmas when you did those ‘healthy’ champagne cocktails. Never again.” Ungrateful. And jealous. Undeterred, I am looking into various arty options. Whilst I am aware that my mind tends to go into overdrive when envisaging the success of this further learning, I’m also trying to be practical.

It’s not worth spending too much money on these pursuits, but there is also the outside chance that I could stumble across my true calling – finally.

So whilst it may seem reckless to sign up for silver jewellery-making lessons, there is always the chance I will design sparkly things so lovely that I will eventually be asked to set up a bespoke jewellery-making service for the rich and famous.

See? Practical.
