Fife distillery uses blockchain

-

A Fife distillery has used blockchain to help whisky enthusiasts trace the provenance of its new release.

Adelphi Distillery first employed the technology earlier this year with the release of The Brisbane, made in partnership with Edinburgh-based Fusion Whisky.

Charlestown-based Adelphi has used the innovative system for a second time with its latest collaboration with Fusion, The Winter Queen, which is released this month.

Each bottle has a unique QR code which can be scanned by a smartphone to show a range of details from the field the barley came originated down to who put on the bottle’s label.

The Winter Queen commemorates the coronation of Scottish princess Elizabeth Stuart, who was crowned Queen of Bohemia 399 years ago. It is the second expression of the whisky to be released.

Adelphi’s managing director Alex Bruce said: “Such was the success of and acclaim for The Winter Queen, we were very keen to bring out another edition.

“This is our most complex fusion to date, with more than six different malt whiskies going into the blend.”

The whisky was made by using Scotch with malt whisky from the Netherlands.

Fusion Whisky’s previous releases – The Glover, The E&K and The Brisbane – celebrate an influential Scot who had a positive influence in the country the partner whisky is sourced.

Each QR code also gives the buyer the opportunity to discover more about the historical Scot each whisky celebrates.
