Honours even in derby thriller
There were no winners or losers in Saturday’s Dundee derby as MJV Wanderers and Grove Menzieshill split the honours after a breathtaking end-to-end encounter at Dalnacraig to maintain the status quo in the women’s Premier League table.
Ellie Stott’s early breakthrough for Grove was cancelled out by Heather Elder’s spectacular high finish but it was the visitors who took a 2-1 lead into the break courtesy of an opportunist strike from Katie Robertson.
Shortly after the restart Vikki Bunce’s close-range deflection claimed parity again.
Two minutes later Robertson’s stunning solo effort restored Grove’s advantage, setting up a grandstand finish which deservedly ended all square when Elder slotted in for 3-3 with a minute to spare.
Edinburgh University remain top, three points clear of Clydesdale Western who swapped places with Wildcats after a 3-2 win.
St Andrews University’s promotion hopes suffered a setback with a 4-1 loss away at Kelburne in Division 2.
In the Championship leagues Stirling Uni picked up a valuable three points with a 4-1 result over George Heriot’s, Perthshire remain comfortably mid-table despite a win and a loss while Stirling Wanderers kept their Championship 2 title hopes alive with victory over Kinross.
Madras and Wanderers II maintained their Midland title rivalry with wins over Perthshire II and Brechin Thistles respectively.
Katy Alexander netted Blairgowrie’s consolation against St Andrews III while Grove IIIs staged a second half recovery to turn a 2-0 half-time deficit into a 4-3 victory over Kinross II.
On Sunday Perthshire II and Kinross II shared six goals, while Jen Macdonald and Nicola Tisdall replied for Monarchs against Perthshire IIIs whose scorers were Jennifer McLaren and Lexie McMillan.
