HRH Prince of Wales – known as the Duke of Rothesay when in Scotland – has been a frequent, and popular, visitor to Courier Country for many years. To celebrate the Duke’s 70th birthday today, and his love of Scotland, we have compiled a picture special recording just a few of his royal visits.

Charles, Prince of Wales (Charles Philip Arthur George) was born on November 14 1948 and is the heir apparent to the British throne. He has been Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay since 1952, and is the oldest and longest-serving heir apparent in British history. He is also the longest-serving Prince of Wales.

Charles was educated at Cheam and Gordonstoun Schools and gained a bachelor of arts degree from Trinity College, Cambridge. He then served in the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy from 1971 to 1976.

In 1981, he married Lady Diana Spencer. They had two sons, Prince William, born 1982, and Prince Harry, born in 1984. In 1996, the couple divorced.

Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris the following year. In 2005, Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles.

Charles founded The Prince’s Trust in 1976, sponsors The Prince’s Charities, and is patron of many other charities and the arts. Have you met the Prince or been involved in any of his initiatives? If you have a story to tell, please email craigie@thecourier.co.uk

You can see more pictures of the Prince, taken over 70 years in our picture spread which you’ll find on pages 20 and 21.
