Four Scots in hunt as Syme survives scare

-

Four Scots kept their hopes alive at the 72-hole cut of the European Tour qualifying school final stage in Tarragona.

The field at the six-round event was reduced to 77 following the fourth round at the Lumine Golf Club, with the cut falling at six under par.

Drumoig’s Connor Syme survived right on the mark after a nervy end to his fourth round but has a lot of work to do to secure his card.

Bogeys at the 16th and 17th at the Lakes Course left him in danger of missing out but a par at the last for a 72 saw him safely through to the final two rounds over the same course.

At the end of the tournament, the top 25 and ties will all earn European Tour cards.

Syme was joined in the 36-hole scramble for places by fellow Scots Marc Warren, a three-time European Tour winner, Craig Ross and Duncan Stewart, who all shot 69 yesterday in what were testing, windy conditions.

Warren is tied for 39th place on nine under with Ross a shot further back. Stewart is at seven under.

England’s Daniel Gavins retained the lead with a two-under-par 69 leaving the Pontefract golfer one clear at 20 under.

France’s Clement Sordet is a stroke further back after his threeunder 68, while Swede Anton Karlsson hit a 67 to tie for third at 17-under alongside Spainard David Borda.

American Kurt Kitayama and Frenchman Romain Langasque both climbed up the leaderboard into a tie for fifth following their respective 65s.

Craigie Hill’s Daniel Young and Muckhart’s Callum Hill were among those who failed to make the cut, along with fellow Scots Jack McDonald, Ewen Ferguson, James Ross, Chris Robb and Scott Henry.
