Club’s delight as Mitchell wins rugby league caps
Strathmore RFC are celebrating the first international player in the club’s 85 year history after Murray Mitchell played twice for Scotland Rugby League in their recent European Championship games.
Mitchell, 21, who plays union for Aberdeen Grammar but continues to turn out for Strathie’s league team, the Silverbacks, was called up for the European game on October 27 against Ireland, and also played the following week against Wales.
Murray started out with the Strathmore Sharks junior club at Inchmacoble at only seven, and has played both codes throughout his career.
“It’s not very often you get the opportunity to represent your country in a sport you love, so I was honoured to be given that chance,” he said. “I loved every minute of the experience, including the challenges of stepping up to international level and gaining my first pro cap.”
Strathmore RFC President Bob Baldie said: “The club is delighted and extremely proud to be associated with Murray’s recent successes.
“As a young player he stood out among his peers as an emerging talent on the field. We are delighted this has been recognised by the national side.
“Supporting our young people to develop through rugby is a key value that underpins our club vision. We believe the development of these skills will support our young people to succeed in life.
“We continue to support Murray and to watch his international career develop.”
