Teenager carried out bottle attack – then left passport at the scene

-

A teenager who hit a man with a bottle after a Highland games was caught when he dropped his passport at the scene.

Kyle Griffiths’ ID was found lying in the gutter next to the remains of a smashed wine bottle which he had used to hit Kevin Wilson on the head.

Stirling Sheriff Court heard Griffiths, 19, waylaid Mr Wilson as he returned from Bridge of Allan Highland Games.

Prosecutor Cheryl Clark said as Mr Wilson passed the town’s Crooked Arm pub, he became aware of Griffiths and another male standing outside and staring at him.

The other man, Ryan Inglis, 21, punched Mr Wilson in the face, and he tried to flee in the direction of the railway station.

Miss Clark said: “Griffiths appeared with a bottle which he struck over Mr Wilson’s head before both ran off.”

Police found Mr Wilson with his nose bleeding from Inglis’ punch. The bottle blow had left no injury.

Miss Clark said: “Close by the incident with the bottle, the accused Griffiths’ passport was lying on the ground, and also a broken part of a bottle neck. The accused were both traced nearby a few minutes later.”

Griffiths, and Inglis, both of Stirling, pled guilty to the August 5 assault.

Defence agent Ken Dalling, for Griffiths, said: “I believe the glass bottle was an empty wine bottle. I doubt it was any particular vintage.

“It was discarded and subsequently smashed. It didn’t smash on Mr Wilson.”

Inglis’ lawyer, Virgil Crawford, said: “There was a dispute about a £60 debt.”

Griffiths was remanded for reports. Inglis was fined £200 and ordered to pay £200 compensation.
