Man jailed after ‘roaring and shouting’ at emergency staff

-

A man who struggled with police, feigned being ill and unconscious and was seen “roaring and shouting” at emergency staff at Perth Royal Infirmary (PRI) has been jailed for six months.

Sheriff Lindsay Foulis said Vincent Parkes, 29, of Northwich had “behaved like an idiot”.

Perth Sheriff Court heard Parkes had drunk alcohol after taking a cold remedy.

Depute-fiscal Robbie Brown said Parkes had been arrested in connection with an incident in Auchterarder but refused to be handcuffed by the police.

“The accused struggled with officers and made if difficult for them to put handcuffs on him,” he said.

“He asked officers if he could be checked at a hospital as he is a diabetic, so he was taken to the A & E department of PRI.”

However, Mr Brown told the court that once Parkes arrived at the hospital he was “roaring and shouting” at emergency staff.

“The accused then feigned illness and unconsciousness at the hospital,” he added.

Solicitor Mike Tavendale said his client had taken a “fair amount” of the cold remedy and drunk alcohol on top of that.

“My client accepts he behaved badly here,” he said.

Sheriff Foulis jailed Parkes and told him: “You behaved like an idiot and there comes a time when you say enough is enough.”

Parkes had admitted resisting arrest from four police officers on October 27 at Crown Inn Wynd, Auchterarder, making himself a dead weight in an attempt to prevent being handcuffed, and shouting at emergency staff at PRI.
