100 years ago

It was a memorable and imposing pageant that was witnessed all along the Fife coast, when Admiral Sir David Beatty brought into the Firth of Forth the surrendere­d ships of the German navy. It was a soul-stirring spectacle –the final episode of the grim struggle in which our gallant sailors have been engaged during the past four years. The first of the ships came into view about noon and the great procession passed under the review of many thousands of eager sightseers. Crail had the first look.

50 years ago

Mr William Shaw (39), a colliery fire officer of Denbeath, has been presented with the Queen’s Commendati­on for brave conduct for his part in rescuing five men from the fire at Michael Colliery, East Wemyss, last September. The presentati­on, at Lancaster House, London, was made by the Minister of Power, Mr Roy Mason. Mr Shaw was the captain of a team summoned to the mine for rescue operations. In intense heat and smoke, the rescued five men from the pit bottom.

Angus is poised to reap the benefits of a multi-million pound hospital constructi­on programme under new plans to build two NHS Trust hospitals in Forfar and Montrose in the next three years. The proposals involve the constructi­on of a new £5.5 million community hospital at Whitehills in Forfar and the replacemen­t on Montrose Royal Infirmary with a £4.5 million developmen­t on the site of a former whisky bond in the town’s Marine Avenue. Work could start as early as spring 1995.

Tayside saw a rise in the number of alcohol-related hospital admissions last year, as the Scottish Government vowed to introduce minimum unit pricing within six months. The region had 467 hospital stays per 100,000 population in 2016-17 – an increase from 451 the previous year. Health Secretary Shona Robison said lives have been lost because of the delay to introducin­g a 50p minimum per unit price of alcohol. The alcohol pricing policy was approved by the Supreme Court last week.
