Admiral Viscount Jellicoe was guest of the Lyceum Club at dinner in celebration of America’s thanksgiving. Responding to the toast of his health, Admiral Jellicoe said he had had many opportunities of thanking the American Navy. That night he had one more. We owed much to their help he said. “The situation in the spring of last year was critical and had it not been for the assistance afforded by the United States Navy, I am not sure what the consequences would have been,” he added. A turbulent Commons debate on the economy and the Chancellor’s latest tax and credit squeeze package ended with a Government majority of 77. The vote – on a formal motion for the adjournment – resulted: Government 328, Opposition 251. Mr Heath, leading the Opposition’s condemnation of the Government and its measures, said it was now clear the consumer was not prepared to bear the brunt of the Government’s measures. “It is the silent revolution of the consumer,” he said. The three families whose lives became enmeshed in the horror of toddler James Bulger’s murder were torn yesterday by contrasting emotions – fear and revenge. Fear for the parents of James’s 11-yearold killers Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, after the trial judge lifted the veil that kept their names secret. And the spectre of revenge with the dead boy’s uncle threatening on TV to kill the two boys if they are ever released. The shocking tale has gripped people all over the world.
