100 years ago

Captain W.T. Shaw, the Coalition candidate for Forfarshir­e, had an excellent send-off at Monifieth, when he opened his campaign. He proved himself a capable public speaker, showed a wide knowledge of the election issues and was given a unanimous vote of confidence. Ex-Provost Stewart said all over the constituen­cy it had been considered that the new electorate, which included ladies and many young men who had fought for us, should have an opportunit­y of expressing their voice.

50 years ago

A helicopter from RAF Leuchars was called to the Skerryvore Rock, in the Hebrides, to rescue a lighthouse keeper who had fallen and lain for two days with a broken leg. The keeper was picked up at 12.50pm after medical treatment by Squadron Leader Jim Greig, medical officer at RAF Leuchars. Awaiting the helicopter’s arrival in the shinty park at Oban were an ambulance and lighthouse officers, who took over from there. Captain of the aircraft was Flight-Lieutenant Pete Wallace.

A Dundee woman won the second largest prize in the history of British bingo at the Gala Club, Stack Leisure Park. The woman, who has declined to be named, won almost £95,000 in the Super Nova national game, an event which links 700 bingo halls across Britain. The Dundee winner has been playing for 20 years and has been a Saturday night regular at the Gala since it opened two years ago. Previously her biggest win was £500. She now intends to buy a car and treat herself to a holiday.

A family has demanded action after an out-of-control oil tanker careered through their fence and came to rest just yards from their front door. The 26-tonne vehicle skidded on black ice on the outskirts of Stanley at around 7.40am yesterday. Mother-of-two Paula Cunningham is renewing calls for Perth and Kinross Council to install crash barriers at the site saying every winter at least three cars come off the road and into their garden. She said: “I don’t feel very safe.”
