‘Class act’ Baird still banging in the goals

Jim Weir expected John Baird to score between 15 and 20 goals for Forfar this season.

But the Station Park boss may have to raise those expectations.

The 33-year-old bagged his 10th strike of the season in the Scottish Cup last weekend and will be looking to continue that run away to Stranraer this afternoon.

Baird is proving to be the class act that Weir believed he would be.

“That was Bairdy’s 150th career goal,” he said.

“There is no doubt in my mind that he could still be playing at a higher level.

“He’s as good a footballer as there is in our division. His link-up play is great and he’ll get goals with his right foot, left foot and head.

“Even when you think he might be tiring a bit in games you’re reluctant to take him off because you know he can come up with a goal out of nothing when you need it – which has happened a few times already this season.

“When he signed I expected him to score between 15 and 20 goals and he’s well on course to do that.”

Forfar are on a run of five wins in six games, with the only blip being the heavy derby defeat to Brechin which was the result of “seven crazy minutes”, according to Weir.

Making it six wins out of seven will be a tough task, though.

He said: “I’m expecting this to be a really hard game. They are a good side who haven’t got as many points as they deserved.”

Weir will be able to select the same team if he chooses to, with Ross Cunningham added to the squad.
