Telfer says win can start challenge

-

Morton’s former United midfielder Charlie Telfer knows Robbie Neilson’s men will be out to make the Greenock side pay for Ayr United’s 5-0 win at Tannadice last weekend.

However, Telfer believes the Cappielow men can add further agony.

He said: “I know from being there that there are a lot of expectations to get back to the top league, and the Ayr result will have hurt.

“There will be a great determination to hit back straight away and there will be a bit of pressure on their manager and players to do that against us.

“However, we have a determination to hit back as well as our 3-0 defeat at Dunfermline last weekend was disappointing.”

Telfer, who spent three seasons at Tannadice after signing from Rangers in 2014, believes Morton can produce the form that would secure them a win.

“Inconsistency is the biggest issue that we face.

“We have shown at times how well we can play, but then we let ourselves down with the next result.

“We lost at Alloa and then played really well against Ayr at their place before losing last weekend at East End Park,” he said.

“It is disappointing to get to a decent level of performance in one game and then go back the way.”

Telfer added: “We know that if we can put a run together we will challenge for a top-four place, and hopefully that run can start against Dundee United.

“We will look to win this one and start putting a bit of pressure on the teams above us.”

United youths lost 4-0 to Kilmarnock at a wet and windy Rugby Park last night.
