Signed Saints tie up star ‘Spoony’ at McDiarmid Park until 2021.

ST JOHNSTONE: Wotherspoon pens new two-year contract

- ERIC NICOLSON

Tommy Wright has described David Wotherspoon as a “manager’s dream”, after the midfielder signed a new two-year contract with St Johnstone.

The versatility of the former Hibs man continues to be a big asset for Saints, according to his boss.

“It’s great to have Spoony sorted out for another two years,” said Wright.

“He has fully deserved it. Spoony is a manager’s dream. I move him about because he can play across the midfield and he just gets on with it.

“He has been a huge part of our success over a number of years.”

Saints will discover today just how long keeper Zander Clark will be sidelined for.

“Zander has been booked in for a scan and we should have a better idea of his injury in the next 24 hours,” Wright reported.

“It’s a concern, but I don’t want to speculate because – once an assessment has been made – we will have a better idea of the timeframe involved. He just over-stretched in training.

“Michael (O’Halloran) has had a tight hamstring. But I will be disappointed if he isn’t fit for Aberdeen this weekend or certainly the Hibs game after that.

“Tony (Watt) has had little niggles with both ankles. Easty (Brian Easton) will play against Morton reserves today and it is good to get him back.”

Reflecting on the weekend point won at Ibrox, Wright added: “There was a lot made of players missing for Rangers on Saturday but we were also affected.

“We were without Drey Wright, arguably our most influential attacking player, Clark, Easton, O’Halloran and Watt.”
