Shinnie’s delight as Ferguson stays put

ABERDEEN: ‘Breath of fresh air’ signs new contract

- JAMIE DURENT

Graeme Shinnie has backed midfield partner Lewis Ferguson for a big future in the game as the teenager looks set to pen a new deal with Aberdeen.

Ferguson joined on a four-year deal from Hamilton Accies in the summer but his performances since then, which have earned rave reviews from manager Derek McInnes, have also earned him a further two-year extension.

His father Derek released the information on the radio during Saturday’s game with St Mirren.

Shinnie said: “Lewis has been a breath of fresh air. For such a young guy he’s come into a big club from Hamilton and took control, which shows maturity. It’s good news for the club on a disappointing day.

“I don’t think I was fully aware about his ability, his maturity and composure.

“He’s a strong boy for a young lad and he’s slotted in so well, which is a credit to him.

“It looks as if he’s been playing here for years.

“I always thought that Ryan Christie when he was at Inverness was always going to be a massive talent and he’s went on to do really well.

“We’ve been fortunate at this club that young boys have come through and done well. It’s full credit to him.

“At that age players are still developing, but when you’re as physically developed as Fergie is it always gives you that added extra to go slot in like he has.

“He brushes off some of the strongest players in the league and I’d have paid good money to have been his physique when I was his age.”

Ferguson has netted vital goals against Burnley, Rangers and Livingston this season, with his seventh of the season coming against the Buddies.

The dropped points were not the only downside at Pittodrie, with Tommie Hoban going off in agony with what looked to be a serious knee injury.

The on-loan Watford defender was playing only his sixth game after missing four months with a dislocated shoulder, while he also missed a year at Vicarage Road due to cruciate ligament damage.

Shinnie added: “Tommie’s came back from his injuries this season and you can see the excitement and delight in his face in training. He’s been superb in training and buzzing to be back and then that happens.

“We are all absolutely gutted for him.”

I’d have paid good money to have been his physique when I was his age. GRAEME SHINNIE
