ROUND UP ATHLETICS

-

Andrew Lemoncello (Fife AC) celebrated a St Patrick’s Day double in Portland, Oregon, winning the Shamrock 15km followed by the 5km race.

20,000 runners participated in the 41st race programme where the Olympian won the hilly 15km race, clocking a record 48 minutes 25 seconds to finish 52 seconds ahead of runner-up Jesse Joseph.

The warm-down 5km went down to the wire as Lemoncello and training colleague Tate Schienbein sprinted for the finish tape, Lemoncello prevailing on the line in 14 minutes 44 seconds.

Lemoncello said: “My legs were dead for the 15km but that’s the feeling I wanted. I managed to run about five seconds a mile faster than my marathon pace on that really tough course, which was way better than I had planned for, so I’m really happy about where my fitness is at.

“I have one really big workout on Friday or Saturday before going to the coast for the weekend and then I’ll just start cruising through in training to the New York indoor marathon race in April.”
