The title applied to last night’s concert in the Kinnaird Hall, Dundee – Dundee Select Choir Victory Concert – was under the circumstances a little unfortunate, for it was the last concert to be given in that hall, which, for more years than most of us can remember, has been the location of all that was best and greatest in music, local and otherwise. The feelings of some of those who were present were, therefore, somewhat saddened and far removed from rejoicing. But the concert itself was thoroughly enjoyable.

A West Fife housewife and her 18-year-old son had an astonishing escape from injury when an explosion wrecked the living room of their home last night. Mrs Janet Rawlings and her son, George, were sitting in the kitchen of their cottage home at the corner of Camps Road and Main Street, Carnock, near Dunfermline, shortly before 7pm when the explosion occurred. A wall was blown down and bricks showered down round about them. Last night Scottish Gas Board inspectors were trying to find the source of the explosion.

A Fife motor cycle scramble racer owes his life to three paramedics who were on hand to administer attention after he was seriously injured in a freak accident. Alex Haddow, from Cowdenbeath, was competing in the first Scottish national scramble event of the season near Stonehaven when he fell off his 500cc Honda machine. One of his feet became trapped in the rear wheel of another machine going past and he was dragged downhill for a distance. When he came to rest, the paramedics sprinted into action.

One of Tayside’s premier cycling events could be expanded in an effort to revive interest and safeguard its future. Organisers of the Etape Caledonia want to add an extra four miles to the 81-mile Highland Perthshire circuit, and also introduce a shorter 40-mile course. But IMG, which coordinates the event, still hopes to increase the route to at least 100 miles for 2019, in an effort to attract elite cyclists. An initial bid to extend the route was rejected by councillors last year after widespread opposition from locals.
