Hawker and Mackenzie Grieve have been rescued. Yesterday, when almost all hope of their safety had been given up, it was announced by the Admiralty that they had been picked up. The two gallant airmen, who set out to fly the Atlantic from St John’s last Sunday, were rescued in mid-Atlantic by a Danish steamer. They were transferred to a British destroyer, and thence to HMS Revenge, on board which vessel they slept last night. They were forced to descend owing to a defect and their aeroplane was lost at sea.

Scores of people taking part in the west-east Great Outdoors Challenge set up camp at Tarfside – and took advantage of special opening hours at Glenesk Stores. Henry and Joan Gordon, who run the rural shop, stayed open late for the hikers to stock up with provisions and take orders for breakfast. Joan said: “The first of the hikers arrived and then we had about 70 through the doors looking for pies and biscuits.”
