Hotel set for Outlander tourism boom

- SEAN O’NEIL

A Perthshire hotel could be set for a tourism boom after being added to the latest official Outlander locations map.

Dunkeld House Hotel is one of eight new locations to be added to the map after scenes from season four of the hit TV show were filmed in the woodlands surrounding the hotel.

The hotel remained tight-lipped on how they would be making the most of their new found fame but admitted it would be “great for business”.

John Shevlin, resort general manager, said: “It was last year that it was filmed and it was great to bring in the actors and it will be great for business in Dunkeld and Perthshire as a whole.”

Mr Shevlin said he expected an influx of visitors from North America and said the hotel would be making arrangements to appeal to fans.

The woodlands of Dunkeld House Hotel doubled as the North Carolina wilderness in the latest season of the show and becomes the newest addition to the Outlander map in Tayside and Fife.

Fellow Perthshire locations include Tibbermore Parish Church, Drummond Castle Gardens and Kinloch Rannoch.

Fife is also well represented on the TV tourist map with Falkland, Dysart Harbour, Aberdour Castle, Culross and Fifie fishing boat The Reaper all making appearances over the four seasons.

The new filming locations in Perthshire, Edinburgh, Glasgow, South Lanarkshire and Forth Valley have been added to Visit Scotland’s guide with the release of Outlander: Season Four on Blu-ray and DVD.

Jenni Steele, film and creative industries manager at VisitScotland, said: “Outlander continues to have a massive effect on Scottish tourism with fans flocking to the sites that have appeared in or have a historical connection to the hit television show.”

Outlander follows the romantic adventures of English Second World War combat nurse Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), who travels back in time to 18th Century Scotland where she falls in love with Highlander Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).
