Blues to face United while City play West Ham

Sead Kolasinac and Mesut Ozil will not be available for Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Newcastle on Sunday as the police investigate “further security incidents”, Arsenal said.

The pair were targeted by carjackers in north London last month, with security camera footage showing Kolasinac confronting the offenders after they approached Ozil’s car – with the two players unhurt during the incident in Golder’s Green.

Neither featured in the Emirates Cup defeat to Lyon the following weekend after talks with head coach Unai Emery but had been expected to be in contention to face Newcastle in the season opener.

However Arsenal released a statement yesterday evening announcing the two players would be unavailable for selection at St James’ Park.

One player who could feature for the Gunners is David Luiz, who Chelsea boss Frank Lampard says did not go on strike and was not ostracised before his surprise deadline day switch.

Brazilian defender Luiz missed a day’s training with the west London club before completing a move to Arsenal for a reported £8 million.

Lampard, who was a team-mate of Luiz’s during his playing career at Stamford Bridge, said the deal was done on amicable terms.

“We had some conversations over the last week, honest conversations because I know David well. And I think the conclusion of that was that he moved on,” said Lampard.

“There certainly wasn’t any strikes. I’ll make that clear straight away. And in terms of fall-outs, no, there weren’t.

Arsenal had been in market for a centre-back having struggled in that position last term and subsequently sold wantaway Frenchman Laurent Koscielny to Bordeaux.

Former Derby boss Lampard begins his Blues tenure with a testing trip to Manchester United on Sunday.

The 41-year-old, who will make a late call on N’Golo Kante’s knee problem for the game at Old Trafford, said winger Callum Hudson-Odoi is training following an Achilles tendon injury.

Paul Pogba is fit to start for Manchester United in the opener.

The midfielder missed the final preseason game against AC Milan due to a back spasm, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed he is fit for Sunday.

Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James could make their debuts, while 17-year-old Mason Greenwood is set to be named in the squad. Eric Bailly and Tim Fosu-Mensah are both injured, while Alexis Sanchez may not be involved after picking up a hamstring issue towards the end of the Copa America.

David Silva has been named as the new club captain of champions Manchester City.

Manager Pep Guardiola has announced the veteran Spanish playmaker, who is now in his final season at the club, came out top in a vote held by the squad.

The 33-year-old will take over from the long-serving Vincent Kompany, who left at the end of last season.

Silva had been the favourite after taking the armband for the majority of City’s pre-season games, as well as the Community Shield, but Guardiola wanted the whole squad to make a decision after returning to training.

Guardiola, who added that Fernandinho, Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero will also be part of a leadership group, said: “David Silva will be our captain. He’s been one decade here, he knows the club and he knows the Premier League.”

Treble winners City begin their latest title defence at West Ham today.

Tottenham, who meet Aston Villa, have handed Lucas Moura a contract extension until 2024.

The Brazilian, who prior to this transfer window was Spurs’ last signing in January 2018, has been rewarded for an impressive term last season.
