100 years ago

The Prince of Wales landed in Newfoundla­nd this morning and rode through enthusiast­ic crowds which lined the two miles of the city streets, which were decked with triumphal arches. Some of the leading morning papers published articles warmly welcoming the arrival of the prince in America. One stated that the prince represents most conspicuou­sly the nation which through dark days battled determined­ly for freedom, justice and right. He is welcomed as a comrade-in-arms.

50 years ago

A new hazard for multi-flat dwellers came to tenants in Dundee’s tallest occupied houses – Wellington Tower, at Maxwelltow­n – yesterday afternoon. A water overflow in a house on the 17th floor of the 21-storey multi poured through the concrete ducts which carry electricit­y cables and ran into other houses in the block. It worked its way right to the ground floor. Miss Christina Samson got home to her flat at 4pm to find her kitchen floor soaked.

The Cairngorm Chairlift Company yesterday unveiled details of a planned revamp of the Cairngorm ski area described as one of the biggest-ever tourism projects in the Highlands. At the heart of the redevelopm­ent is a funicular railway to replace the existing chairlifts system – parts of which are more than 30 years old. Costing over £16 million the redevelopm­ent would make the resort as innovative as it was when it opened in 1961. A tremendous amount of work has been done over the past 14 months.

Organisers of the Monifieth Medieval Fair, who battled to secure funding for this year’s event, had another fight on their hands to ensure the show went ahead. Despite torrential rain yesterday, organisers did not hesitate to declare that the “show will go on”. They praised the Monifieth community for getting behind the event and for turning out in their droves to enjoy a full programme of events throughout the afternoon. Committee member Derek Uchman said the turnout was “much better than anticipate­d”.
