International musicians in Perth for Super Sunday procession
Perth is getting ready for a “Super Sunday” of music and performance.
Acts from around the world will descend on the Fair City this weekend for its fourth annual City of Perth Salute.
The parade, inspired by the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, will set off from South Inch at midday tomorrow.
This year’s procession will feature, amongst others, the Beijing Wind Band, the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force Steel Orchestra and the New Zealand Army Band.
Performers from the International Youth Band Festival, held at Perth Concert Hall tonight, will also take part.
They will march along Tay Street to North Inch, where a series of performances will take place between 1pm and 2.15pm.
At the end of the event, there will be a ceremony to grant Brigadier Sir Melville Jameson – former Lord Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross – the Freedom of the City of Perth.
Provost Dennis Melloy said: “It has been a pleasure to welcome hundreds of young people to Perth this week for the second International Youth Band Festival. I look forward very much to enjoying this fantastic standard of musicianship once again.”
He added: “The line-up for the City of Perth Salute on Super Sunday is exciting, with national and international performers from across the globe.
“It really is a weekend of celebration across Perth and Kinross.”
This weekend’s events follow Perth’s successful “Super Saturday” which saw thousands come into the city centre for a medieval fair, Perthshire Pride and a visit from actor Ian McKellan.
