Two months of major roadworks will see large diversions in place

Perth city centre motorists are set to face more than two months of roadworks starting next week.

Perth and Kinross Council intends to carry junction improvement works on the corner of Barrack Street and Caledonian Road from Monday, lasting for eight to 10 weeks.

The works will include upgrading the traffic signal equipment, resurfacing of the carriageway and footways, and improvements to the junction layout to reduce the number of pedestrian crossing points.

By reducing the amount of traffic islands, the local authority hopes the junction will be more pedestrian-friendly and safer for routine traffic signal maintenance.

Additionally, the bus lane will be changed into a cycle lane as the current bus lane is deemed to be underused and can be difficult for vehicles to manoeuvre out of during times of busy traffic, especially in queues.

In order to carry out the works as safely and efficiently as possible, the works will be broken up into three different phases.

The first phase will last six weeks, with three-way temporary lights covering the majority of the junction layout changes.

The second phase will start on October 7 and last four weeks. Work will allow the construction of a new traffic island adjacent to the northbound lane.

Phase three will involve full closure of the junction overnight for two weeks.

During the road closures, the official diversion route will be via Caledonian Road, Glasgow Road, Broxden Roundabout, the A9 bypass, A85 Crieff Road and Dunkeld Road.
