Tory stalwart June Morrison MBE, 78

- June Morrison was a church elder.

A prominent member of the Conservative Party in Scotland has died aged 78.

June Morrison was a stalwart of the party in Aberdeen and served as election agent for one of the city’s MPs.

Mrs Morrison, who was made a Member of the British Empire in 2017, was an active member of the Aberdeen Conservative Party for four decades and was an elder at Midstocket Church in the city.

Born in October 1940, she spent 50 years working hard in the financial sector, attaining senior positions.

But it will be her dedication to politics and the church that many in the city remember her for.

Alongside her supportive husband Alan, she took on every voluntary role available, and was also the national chairman of the Conservative policy forum from 1998 to 2004, and served on the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party’s executive.

At the same time as holding those roles, Mrs Morrison had acted as an election agent during every parliamentary and local government election in Aberdeen since 1987.

During the most recent general election, she acted as the voluntary agent for Ross Thomson, who was elected as the first Conservative MP in Aberdeen South since 1997.

Mrs Morrison was also an active campaigner for the Tories.

Outwith politics, she was an elder in the Church of Scotland at Midstocket Parish Church and regularly acted as a steward and representative at the General Assembly of Scotland.

Last night, Aberdeen South MP Ross Thomson said Mrs Morrison would be missed.

Mr Thomson said: “Over a number of elections, June acted as my agent. But June was much more than a friend and agent – to me, she was family.

“When all our hard work paid off in June 2017, when Aberdeen South turned blue for the first time in decades, she was the first to know the result with me.

“We cried, we celebrated, and for the last two and a half years she’s been my strongest support.

“June was very special. People like her are very rare. She was the most loving, caring, decent and dedicated person I know. Her support and advice helped me through some tough times. I owe her a lot.”
