Skoda’s new SUV Kamiq is coming

- JACK MCKEOWN MOTORING EDITOR jmckeown@thecourier.co.uk

Skoda has added another SUV to its lineup.

The Kamiq is the smallest in the Czech firm’s SUV range, sitting underneath the Kodiaq and Karoq. It will be pitched against the Volkswagen T-Cross and Nissan Juke.

Like its larger stablemates, the Kamiq features split headlights with daytime running LEDs.

Skoda says the Kamiq will have best in class interior space. Given the roominess of its other models – particularly the Octavia and Superb – that does not sound like an empty boast.

Elbow, knee and headroom are all expected to be better than can be found in its rivals and the boot is an excellent 400 litres too.

Based on the same platform as the Scala hatchback, the Kamiq sits 39mm higher.

Raised ride height and better ground clearance may not be used for their traditional purpose of off-roading, but will give the high up driving position buyers of SUVs seem to crave.

Speaking of off-roading, the Kamiq is really not intended for it. Skoda aren’t even bothering to launch a four-wheel drive model – all versions will be frontwheel drive only.

Customers will have the option of three engines, two petrol and one diesel. A 1.0-litre TSI petrol offers 115hp, while a more potent 1.5-litre dishes up 150hp. There will also be a 115hp, 1.6-litre diesel model. Buyers can pair those engines with a standard six-speed manual gearbox or with the Volkswagen group’s seven-speed twin-clutch DSG transmissions.

According to Skoda, the name Kamiq comes from the language of the Inuit people living in northern Canada and Greenland and means “something that fits perfectly in every situation – like a second skin”.

Inside, there’s another 26 litres of storage space, along with clever touches like an umbrella compartment (complete with umbrella) in the driver’s door.

The Kamiq should go on sale towards the of the year and prices will be revealed closer to the time.
