A settlement was reached yesterday in the railway dispute. Sir Auckland Geddes at a conference with the men’s delegates at the Board of Trade announced an amended offer by the Government. The new offer gives a maximum of 15 shillings per day to drivers and 11 shillings per day to firemen. The Executive Committee of the Unions agreed to recommend their members to accept the terms. Although the railwaymen have deferred their decision, there appears to be little doubt that the offer will be accepted.

Unfortunately, mechanical breakdowns delayed the work, but it is expected that traffic will be back to normal today.

There was no indication last night that Atherton was contemplating resignation.

Urgent talks are being sought to quell the rise in vigilante groups targeting Angus towns in their bid to snare paedophiles. Members of the Wolf Hunters UK group who travelled to Forfar from Glasgow to confront a local family could return later this week to stage a protest after being escorted from the town by police. The vigilantes have confirmed one of their number was wielding a brick “in self-defence” during last Wednesday’s incident, which sparked a major police turnout.
