Lichties will ‘have a pop’ at United – Campbell

-

Arbroath manager Dick Campbell has no intention of sitting in at Tannadice against Dundee United in their Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Cup tie and trying to sneak a winner, even though Robbie Neilson’s side scored six times in their last game.

Campbell said: “Dundee United had a terrific result and performance against Dundee in their last outing.

“They will have been flying high all last week after that and looking forward to the start of this game.”

“They will want to build on that. However, we will go there and have a pop at them.

“We have had two good wins in a row in the Championship including a 1-0 success over Dunfermline last weekend, so we are feeling good about ourselves as well.”

Another reason that Campbell believes his men should not feel intimidated is that they won on United’s turf last season.

He explained: “We went to Tannadice in the Betfred Cup and won on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

“We know that we can perform there.

“United have gone through a lot of change since then however we have no reason to feel that we cannot go and compete in a tough environment.”

Despite their recent sixpoint haul, Campbell is likely to make changes to his starting line-up.

However, he feels that they could well make the Gayfield men stronger as he explained: “We have boys who have been champing at the bit to get a game and we have resisted that in our league fixtures.

“It would be unfair to keep doing that to them so they will get a chance in this one.

“They have the chance to show me that they should stay in the starting XI.

“The best way to do that is by playing well in a game that we win.”

The Lichties miss the injured Scott Stewart and veteran Gavin Swankie as well as the cup-tied pair of Josh Campbell and Miko Virtanen – however, on-loan Hibs midfielder Ben Stirling is clear to play.
