Fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh, aged 74

-

One of fashion’s most famous photographers has died at the age of 74.

German-born Peter Lindbergh was renowned around the world for capturing beauty without retouching images, and his portraits appeared in the pages of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, the New Yorker and more.

Born in German-occupied Poland in 1944, Mr Lindbergh studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts in the early ’60s, and opened his own studio in 1973.

He made a name for himself in the world of photography for taking photographs of his subjects in a natural style, with minimal makeup.

During the ’90s, he rose through the ranks and was widely credited with launching that era of supermodels with his photography of the likes of Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista. As well as fashion, he was also celebrated in the music world, shooting the cover for Beyonce’s 2008 album I Am… Sasha Fierce.

Mr Lindbergh’s realism-focused work rose to popularity during a period when the fashion industry was heavily dominated by doctored images of glamour and success.

Among those paying tribute to Mr Lindbergh last night was the Duchess of Sussex.

She had worked with Mr Lindbergh in the past, and personally selected him to shoot the 15 women on the cover for the September issue of British Vogue, which she guest edited.

The “Forces for Change” issue featured powerful images of influential women including Jane Fonda, Greta Thunberg, and Jacinda Arden, the prime minister of New Zealand.

In a tribute posted online, the duchess said: “His work is revered globally for capturing the essence of a subject and promoting healthy ideals of beauty, eschewing photoshopping, and preferring natural beauty with minimal makeup.

“Forces for Change was one of the esteemed photographer’s final published projects.

“He will be deeply missed.” British Vogue’s editor Edward Enninful also paid tribute to the influential man. “Peter Lindbergh was both a visionary photographer and a dear friend,” he said.

“His ability to see real beauty in people, and the world, was ceaseless and we will live on through the images he created.

“He will be missed by everyone who knew him.”
