100 years ago

The first day of Dundee’s initial civilian flying meeting passed off very successful­ly at Lochee Park, to which a very large crowd of spectators was attracted. A great many flights were made, and all the amateur aviators were thrilled, and also delighted with their experience of a trip in the air. Before the week is out, Dundee will no doubt be vying with Perth in enthusiast­ic appreciati­on of the enterprise of the Scottish Aerial Photos Co Ltd, under whose auspices the meeting is being conducted.

50 years ago

A full investigat­ion began yesterday after rifled mail bags were found strewn along a Highland railway track. Two bags were found along the Wick to Inverness line at Golspie by bank clerk Graham Ross, 20. More were seen yesterday by a train driver north of Helmsdale in East Sutherland. Police and British Rail believe that the bags might have been thrown out of a Wick to Inverness train late at night. It is thought they contained mail from Orkney and Caithness.

A major bomb scare in Aberdeen was labelled as a hoax early this morning after disposal experts dealt with a suspect package left outside the city’s sheriff court. Bomb squad officers from Edinburgh took 30 minutes to examine the device around midnight before declaring it safe. No explosives were found inside the package. A police spokesman said the bomb squad officers had dealt with the device and they were satisfied it was a hoax. Police were alerted to the device around 9pm following a series of anonymous phone calls.

Patients in Tayside could be denied medicine and organs for transplant because of Brexit, NHS Tayside has warned. The health board has set up a special Brexit Co-Ordinating Group to analyse the potential risks of leaving the European Union and ways to address them. A Freedom of Informatio­n response reveals the potentiall­y catastroph­ic consequenc­es of leaving the European Union, particular­ly under a “no-deal” scenario.
