Man jailed after assaults, threat to kill and brandishing knife

A man who brandished a knife and an umbrella as a weapon at a Perthshire holiday park has been jailed for more than a year.

Alexandru Banuca made threats to kill two brothers who had come to the aid of their friend after he had assaulted her.

Solicitor Billy Somerville, defending, said Banuca had consumed alcohol at the time of the incident and appeared to have suffered “retribution” for the initial attack at Altamount chalets in Blairgowrie.

He said the 27-year-old intends to return to Romania after his release.

Sheriff William Wood told Banuca a custodial sentence was unavoidable.

He said: “It is clear that a considerable amount of alcohol had been taken, and because of that alcohol your judgment was impaired.

“Even if you had appeared as a first offender a custodial sentence was inevitable.

“It is to be hoped that you’ll take into account and learn that excess alcohol leads to a loss of control because, if you do not learn that now, there may be the risk of something happening in the future.”

Banuca, a prisoner at Perth, admitted assaulting two people at Altamount chalets on March 17.

He further admitted behaving in a threatening and abusive manner by shouting, swearing, making offensive comments, acting in an aggressive manner and brandishing both an umbrella and a knife at two people while threatening to kill them.

He also pled guilty to possession of offensive weapons.

Sheriff Wood jailed him for 59 weeks.
