End of Hurricane Humberto to hit UK on equinox

-

Courier Country is set to escape the worst of 50mph storms which are to batter Scotland.

The Met Office forecast the autumn equinox today to see remnants of Hurricane Humberto arrive after buffeting Bermuda.

Gusts pushing 50mph are due tonight and tomorrow in the west of Scotland, with Humberto causing sharp downpours lasting until Thursday, as highs fall to 15C.

The Met Office warned of more gales and rain in the second half of the week.

Tayside and Fife will be hit by rain and winds but the west will be worst-affected.

It comes after a 24C weekend sizzle which saw temperatures hotter than Monaco.

Weather maps show Hurricane Jerry following in Humberto’s tracks and affecting Britain this week, although the Met Office said there is uncertainty over its track.

Over the weekend, daytrippers caused heavier traffic on coastal routes.

Temperatures almost 10C above normal saw Tesco expected to sell 150,000 ice lollies and 350,000 sausage packs in the UK this weekend.

The September heat bubble is bursting, ex-BBC and Met Office forecaster John Hammond, of weather-trending, said.

But the Indian summer is set to return in October.

Met Office forecaster Helen Roberts said: “A very different and more autumnal week is ahead, with wet and sometimes windy weather as temperatures fall back to the high teens.

“The remnants of Humberto are caught in a deep, lowpressure area bringing outbreaks of wet weather from tonight until Thursday, mostly in the west but with nowhere exempt.

“There will be gale-force 40-45mph gusts on west coasts into Tuesday.

“Low pressure will continue to dominate, with potential for the second half of the week to see further gales and heavy showers, especially in the west.

“Some forecast models take the remnants of Jerry in the direction of the UK, but there are large uncertainties.”

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “The weekend’s late September sizzle has felt like midsummer for some.

“But we’re switching straight to autumn with 50mph gales possible in a blustery week ahead.”

Mr Hammond added: “Our bubble is about to burst.

“Boosted by ex-Hurricane Humberto, the jet stream will fling bouts of wet and windy weather across the UK through the week.

“It’s appropriate for the autumn equinox.”

But a Met Office forecaster added: “Early October may bring some fine and settled weather, with warmer days.”
