STENHOUSEMUIR 1 BRECHIN CITY 0

A sometimes feisty affair saw Stenhousemuir win Saturday’s League 2 encounter by a solitary goal in the 68th minute when David Hopkirk headed home a Willie Gibson corner.

Brechin’s frustration was palpable at the final whistle when Ollie Hamilton was red carded for comments after a City penalty claim had been turned down in the dying seconds of the game.

Manager Mark Wilson in only his second game, though disappointed about some decisions, was more positive about the overall performance.

“It seemed that any foul we made was a yellow card and that there was one blatant incident when their goalie punched a player in the head and nothing was done.”

The incident in question came in the 27th minute of the game following a bad foul on Graeme Smith by Kieran Inglis.

Smith reacted angrily and although the keeper escaped censure, Inglis, Paul McManus and Ryan McCord were booked for the visitors and Gibson for the home side in the ensuing commotion.

On the performance though Wilson was happier: “We played pretty well, kept our shape. We looked good.

“I didn’t think they looked any threat whatsoever and that’s the disappointing thing to lose a goal on one set piece that we should be better than.

“Things are progressing, we are in the right direction, it was a lot better than it was last week.

“It’s a new system that I’m putting in place – will take a wee while to get used to but we will get there.

“We are chatting to one or two about loan deals but we need to pick guys that add to the team not just make up numbers.

“We take a lot of confidence from having Jonathan Page and Dougie (Hill) back and with Scott Reekie at right-back we looked solid today.”
