Frustrated Saints boss rues bad decisions

- NEIL ROBERTSON

St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright admitted his side may have been on the wrong end of some questionable decisions from the officials yesterday as they were beaten by Rangers.

However, his main frustration came from his players’ inability to carry out the defensive basics correctly.

Saints were on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline with Steven Gerrard’s side ultimately running out comfortable winners thanks to second-half goals from Alfredo Morelos, Connor Goldson and a late double from sub Jermaine Defoe.

The home side felt aggrieved that they were not awarded a goal when the score stood at 2-0 – they were convinced a Murray Davidson shot had crossed the line.

There were also grumbles about one of Defoe’s goals but, overall, Wright admitted Rangers deserved to win.

He said: “At half-time we thought Rangers probably looked at their most dangerous on the counter attack. That’s where their first goal comes from.

“The decision-making was poor. You know Morelos wants to get tight to you and roll you.

“For all that he does well, we gifted the first goal. For the second they got a free header and we were behind the eight ball.

“We tried to stay in the game and we think we got a perfectly good goal. We didn’t get it and they went up the field and scored.

“You think it is going to be 2-1 but it is 3-0 and game over.

“We think it is over the line, I know Rangers are saying it wasn’t.”

Wright added: “The fourth goal was well offside. But refereeing decisions aren’t what cost us the game, it was our poor decision-making and poor defending.

“Rangers deserved their win.”
