BRITISH MOUNTAIN RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIP

-

ATHLETICS

Andy Douglas (Inverclyde) overcame both the heat and terrain to win the British Mountain Running Championships and World Trials at Llanberis, Wales.

The course over Moel Eilio doubled as the trials for November’s World Mountain Running Championships in Argentina later this year. Representing Scotland, Douglas hit the front early building a commanding lead over the 12.5km (710m) course to finish over two minutes ahead of Joe Steward (England). James Espie secured sixth place ahead of Hamish Wolfe 9th and Gavin Bryson 12th.

The rest of the Scottish sextet James Dunn and Hamish Battle ran strongly to finish 14th and 22nd respectively. Scotland claimed the team gold medals ahead of England with Wales in third.

The Scottish women’s team of Miranda Grant, Jill Stephens, Catriona Graves and Caroline Marwick secured much deserved silver medals behind England. Scotland’s junior hill runners made the trip down to Llanberis seeking to defend the Edinburgh junior trophy they won in style last year in Ireland. Lauren Dickson (Lasswade) won the U20 Women’s race to secure a place at the World Championships. Backed up Grace Molloy, Lynn McKenna and Rhona Mowat the quartet won team gold.

Fife AC’s Anna Hedley finished second in the U17s race and strong runs from Bridget Harley, Pippa Carcas and Helen Chong held off England to take another set of team gold.

Both the Scotland junior men secured team silver – the U20s represented by Hamish Hickey (fourth), Sunny McGrath, Tom Berry and Eoghann Gollan while Struan Bennet (Fife AC) led home the team of Harry Henricksen, Harry McGill and James Connelly.

England finished as overall victors beating Scotland into second place by four points with Wales third.
