Sobbing spree in prospect at screening of new biopic

-

When did I become such a sap? As my regular reader knows, I go regularly with a group of friends to the cinema, where we watch and then discuss the film before spending an extra hour or so putting the world to rights. However, I have to be careful when deciding which films to see these days on account of my everincreasing tendency to blub uncontrollably if the content is sad/joyful/moving in any way whatsoever.

So far so embarrassing, but a fresh horror has now presented itself: It seems I can be set off on a sobbing spree DURING THE TRAILERS.

What is wrong with me?

At the last outing (The Farewell – brilliant and also intentionally very moving so I wasn’t the only one in floods of tears) there was a trailer for Judy, the new biopic about Judy Garland.

Much to the amusement of my companions, I started welling up as the excerpts were shown.

Unfortunately we are due to go and see the actual film today, so who knows what will happen. I may have to be carted out of the cinema for upsetting the other patrons.

The same thing happened when my two sisters were taken to see Watership Down at the cinema just after they had lost their pet rabbits to a deadly disease. Who could have foreseen that all these decades later their big sister would be similarly affected, not by bunnies in peril but by...well, anything really.

Luckily, my family is used to my over-the-top emotional reactions to screen dramas, so I can indulge my sappy tendencies quietly at home without too much judgment.

Indeed, The Student has inherited some of this sappiness and we have been known to set aside time for a film or TV programme that we are looking forward to having a good weep over.

But when it comes to subject matter, I’m not talking the traditional tearjerkers any more, just any old thing.

At least I’m forewarned for today’s outing and can arm myself with tissues, having found the trailer so emotionally draining.
