GIFFORDTOWN 5KM

The Giffordtown 5km Road Race tested 144 race finishers as heavy rain threatened to wreak havoc with the traditional course.

Organisers contemplated a complicated shuttle up and down the road to the deepest section of flooding, but runners voiced their desire to complete the traditional out and back route.

U20 St Andrews junior Craig Morris forced the pace from the start but over the final 100m run-in had to dig deep, launching a determined kick to hold off chasing over40 veterans Paul Kieran (PH Racing) and Gordon Barrie (Dundee Hawkhill).

Morris took the finish line in 16 minutes 23 seconds while Kieran, at 16.26, had a mere one second to spare ahead of Barrie in third.

The women’s race was clearer cut as Laura Gibson (Fife AC) finished 26th overall, first female, clocking 18.29 – 29 seconds ahead of Kristin Lownie (PH Racing) who was 32nd in 18.58. Cupar over-40 veteran Rhona van Rensburg followed home as third female/40th overall in 19.20.
