Wanderers storm into first place

- Vikki Bunce started the victory with a quick-fire double.

A third win on the spin took MJV Wanderers into pole position in the Premiership while former leaders Western Wildcats fell prey to the wily ways of arch rivals Clydesdale Western.

Charlotte Watson, fresh from her midweek GB exploits against India, joined the line up against Hillhead but it was ex-GB player Vikki Bunce who laid the foundations for victory with a quick-fire double in the opening quarter. With the result nailed when Lucy Williamson added a single before half-time, the Dundee outfit eased off before Heather Howie’s effort was cancelled out by a late consolation.

The Glasgow derby lived up to its top-of-the-bill tag with Clydesdale edging first-half exchanges while momentum switched to the Cats after the break.

The points stayed at home when Jen Eadie rattled in a decisive setpiece at the end of the third quarter.

Despite a dream start Grove Menzieshill dropped their first points of the season against Watsonians who were caught cold when Ellie Stott and Lucy Murray ran up a 2-0 home advantage after five minutes.

The balance of power shifted when ex-Grovie Sarah Jamieson, Emily Newlands and Nikki Stobie turned the tables before a late Lucy Lanigan deflection put the final seal on a 4-2 victory.

Title holders Edinburgh University showed newly-promoted Merlins Gordonians no mercy as they ramped up their goal difference with a 10-0 scoreline and GHK broke their duck with a 2-1 win over neighbours Glasgow University.

Success in the lower leagues was sparse with St Andrews University taking a point in division two while Grove seconds, Dundee University and Kinross all succumbed to their respective opponents.

Madras FP top-scored in the opening round of the Midland League Cup with Jade Milne claiming a hat-trick in the 10-0 win over St Andrews V.

Goals from Paula Moelter (two) and youngster Riley Thomson eased Perthshire seconds ahead of Kinross seconds, who replied twice through Jenny Thoms.

The experienced ranks of Wanderers seconds proved too much for Perthshire IIIs talented young squad with Amy Snelle and Ruth Gamble netting three apiece as the title holders won 8-0.
