Mural ‘perfect tribute’ to Kelty boxer Connor Law
COMMUNITY: Late fighter remembered with touching art installation in town
The parents of Fife boxing hero Connor Law have hailed a new giant mural as the perfect tribute to their son.
Kaye and Gary Law were there to witness the unveiling of the artwork depicting Connor, which now adorns the side of a building in their home town of Kelty.
It features the Muhammad Ali quote “Don’t count the days, make the days count”, which Connor had tattooed on his leg.
Connor, a three-time national champion who was unbeaten in 13 fights since he turned pro in 2014, died suddenly in June at the age of 26.
Speaking as the finished 30ft-high artwork went on view at the Number One Goth pub for the first time, Connor’s dad, Gary, said he was overwhelmed by the detail and effort that had gone into it.
“Seeing it finished just took our breath away,” he said.
“The artists have captured every detail just perfectly, it’s a stunning piece of work.
“Connor was a credit to us, he’d fight a lion if he had to with no fear, but we brought him up to be polite and have respect and that’s been reflected by the feedback and the amount of people who have welcomed this tribute to our son.
“We are very proud of him and it’s nice to know that this great community that is Kelty feels the same way.”
The mural was created by Celie Byrne and Donna Forrester, two of the leading lights behind the Kelty Art Collective responsible for transforming the town with a range of public artworks over the last two years.
“It’s been an emotional one for many and that does rub off and make you think,” said Donna.
“This was a huge challenge for me and Celie and now that it’s finally completed we’re really pleased with the end product.”
The building’s owner, Asif Hussain, said: “I knew Donna from previous art work she had done on another property for me and I told her my ideas for a tribute.
“I approached Gary and Kaye who had been regulars in our original pub in Kelty – The Crown – while my dad ran the business to ask for their blessing for this to happen and Kaye burst into tears.
“I mentioned the Muhammad Ali quote ‘Don’t count the days, make the days count’ and was stunned when Gary told us Connor had that tattooed on his ankle.”
