Robertson keen to win derby bragging rights

-

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson is determined to be the celebrating Scottish presence come the end of Sunday’s keenly-anticipated fixture against rivals Manchester United.

The former Dundee United player and United midfielder Scott McTominay were both among Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad for last week’s double header against Russia and San Marino, but will be on opposite sides when their clubs meet in one of the most famed rivalries in world football this weekend.

Robertson has yet to taste victory at Old Trafford, with Liverpool’s last away victory in the fixture a 3-0 triumph in March 2014, and the former Tangerines star, who left Tannadice that same year, knows how significant a victory for Jurgen Klopp’s men would be this weekend.

Robertson said: “I think what makes the fixture so special is that it’s historic. There have been such great battles down the years.

“They have always had top teams who have always fought against each other for everything on the pitch.

“It’s always like that. And it’s genuinely a different atmosphere when you play against them. It’s one game that we always look forward to.

“Since I’ve been a Liverpool player we’ve not managed to get a result at Old Trafford, so hopefully that changes on Sunday.

“There have also been a lot of Scottish players and managers who have contributed, down the years, to both clubs.

“We obviously have that connection and it’s good that me and Scott can sort of fly the flag down there.

“Hopefully more can come down and join us, and keep that tradition going.”

Scotland skipper Robertson has been impressed with the performances of McTominay, who won his 12th national team cap in Sunday’s 6-0 victory over San Marino, adding :“There was a wee bit of banter with Scott during the Scotland duty.

“I thought Scott was fantastic for us against San Marino.

“He’s been excellent all season in a United team that has had its critics. I think he’s carried himself very well.”
