Teenage Angus endurance racer Sandy Mitchell is starting the busiest race week of his year with the hope of having a Lamborghini world title tucked into his race suit by the time he leaves southern Spain.

The 19-year-old from Letham, near Forfar, begins testing on Tuesday at Circuit de Jerez for a series of four races in his No 1 Prestige Performance Lamborghini Huracan, starting with the final double header of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North American Championship on the 2.75-mile Spanish track.

Mitchell and Italian team-mate Andrea Amici sit just 12 points off the championship lead in their Wayne Taylor Racing-prepared machine, with the North American crown firmly in their sights.

Immediately after that title is decided, the duo will then contest the Lamborghini Trofeo World Final, a tworound end-of-season bringing together Lamborghini’s European, Asian and North American one-make series contenders.

“It’s going to be an absolutely fantastic week’s racing,” said Mitchell, part of the Lamborghini Squadra Corse GT3 Junior Program and a member of the prestigious British Racing Drivers’ Club Rising Star scheme.

“I’ve never raced at Jerez before, but I’m looking forward to it immensely. I think the Huracan will suit the circuit’s fast-flowing corners.

“The bulk of the Super Trofeo tracks I’ve raced at in the States this year have been new to me.

“On a couple of the circuits I’ve managed to set new track records, so I’m confident I’ll be fast and ready for the races.

“Our first target is to win the opening two races to ensure we have every chance of lifting the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North American Championship.

“It’s going to be tough, because we have 12 points to make up on the leaders, but Andrea and I have won already this season and we’re certainly up for the fight in Spain.”

The chance to be crowned Lamborghini World Champion is, however, the ultimate goal for Black Bull Whisky-backed Mitchell, a class winner in this year’s Spa 24 Hours.

“To be able to pit myself against the best in the world from not only North America, but also North Europe and Asia, is something I’m really looking forward to.”
