100 years ago

The Drumtochty Castle and the Dellavaird estates, extending to about 4,900 acres, and including two famous grouse moors, were exposed for sale in London yesterday. There were no bids and afterwards the estates were put up for sale in four lots. Again there were no bids for the four lots which were withdrawn. The sale of the sporting estate of Kinlochewe, Ross-shire, extending to 60,000 acres and of the sporting estate of Arnisdale, Inverness-shire, extending to 9,200 acres, were also withdrawn.

50 years ago

Mr Eric Fraser, owner of the Isle of Skye Hotel, Perth, was formerly technical director for all Aristotle Onassis’ passenger ships and tankers. He designed the kitchens and dining rooms, plus the decor of the cabins – in fact, almost every part of the ships. Mr Fraser said: “Mr Onassis is a very good businessma­n! I met him nearly every day, but he was a bit of a tyrant as far as work was concerned.” He was with Onassis for eight years. In almost 30 years Mr Fraser has visited nearly every corner of the globe.

The new Ice World at Forfar Indoor Sports in Suttieside Road welcomed hundreds of people through its doors at the weekend. The feature-filled premises, where polar bears and penguins look down on the skating surface, hosted people eager to renew their skill or to experience for the first time the thrill of ice skating. After a hectic weekend director Mr Brian Bonnyman is confident the latest venture will be well supported. “It has been very busy and every session has been extremely popular,” he said.

Nearly one in 10 P1 children in Tayside requires immediate dental treatment. Hundreds of five-year-olds were found to have major dental problems when checked at school, according to official figures for 2017/18. Nine per cent of P1 pupils in Perthshire and the surroundin­g areas needed swift medical interventi­on for “severe decay or abscess”. Alex Cole-Hamilton, the Liberal Democrat MSP, said there are “serious challenges” in Tayside with the dental health of the poorest lagging well behind their richer peers.
